Applying for a Marriage License in Waldorf

Waldorf residents apply at the Charles County Circuit Court in La Plata. Only one party needs to appear in person. This is consistent with Maryland's current law, which allows one applicant to bring valid photo ID for both parties. Both parties must still provide valid photo ID, so bring both IDs even if only one person is present. You will also need your Social Security number. If either party was previously married, bring documentation showing how that marriage ended, including the date and place.

The marriage license fee in Charles County is $40, which is one of the lower fees in Maryland. Under Md. Code, Family Law § 2-401, a valid license is required before any marriage ceremony in the state. After the clerk issues the license, a 48-hour waiting period applies under Md. Code, Family Law § 2-405. Your license becomes valid at 6:00 AM on the second calendar day after application. It remains valid for six months from that date.

Under Md. Code, Family Law § 2-406, the ceremony must take place in Charles County. If you plan to marry in a different county or state, apply in that jurisdiction instead. After the ceremony, the officiant signs the license and returns it to the clerk's office. That return filing creates the official Charles County marriage record.

Civil Ceremonies at the Charles County Courthouse

Charles County offers civil marriage ceremonies for $25. Ceremonies are available Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM by appointment only. Call the Marriage Records Department at 301-932-3255 to schedule your ceremony after your license has been issued and the 48-hour waiting period has passed.

One thing that makes Charles County stand out is the outdoor ceremony option. Weather permitting, you can hold your civil ceremony outside rather than inside the courthouse. This is not common in Maryland. Most counties offer indoor-only civil ceremonies. The outdoor setting is available in suitable weather and adds a more open feel to what is otherwise a simple court ceremony. If you are interested in the outdoor option, mention it when you call to book. Availability depends on weather and scheduling on that day. Both the indoor and outdoor options are available for the same $25 fee.

Certified Copies of Waldorf Marriage Records

Certified copies of Charles County marriage records cost $5.50 each. You can request copies in person at the courthouse in La Plata or by mail. For mail requests, send a written request to the Clerk of the Circuit Court for Charles County, 200 Charles Street, La Plata, MD 20646. Include both parties' full names as they appear on the marriage license, the approximate year of marriage, the number of copies you need, and your return address and phone number. Make payment by check or money order payable to "Clerk of the Circuit Court."

Certified copies carry the clerk's official seal, which makes them legally valid for name changes with the Social Security Administration, passport applications, estate work, and other official uses. A plain copy does not carry the seal and will not work for most legal or government purposes. Always request certified copies when you need the record for official reasons.
